Frequency Measuring Test Set for April 6 UTC

The April Frequency Measuring Test (FMT) will take place on Friday, April 6, 0100 until 0225 UTC (the evening of Thursday, April 5 in US time zones). The format for the April FMT is a single-frequency exercise with one transmitting station in eastern Oklahoma, K5CM. Measure the key-down transmitted frequency and report your results.

More than 30,000 New Ham Licensees and 7,000 Amateur Radio Exam Sessions in 2017

For the fourth year in a row, more than 30,000 new licensees joined the Amateur Radio ranks, and the ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC) conducted more than 7,000 Amateur Radio exam sessions, serving some 35,350 candidates for a new or upgraded license. The 2017 ARRL DXCC Yearbook is now available for viewing and downloading. The DXCC Yearbook includes the 2017 Annual List, as well as the 2017 Clinton B. DeSoto Challenge top scorers. Radio Club of America Announces New Endowment

The Radio Club of America (RCA) has announced a new endowment, the Howard (VE2AED) and Micheline (KM6FOH) Rosen Fund, which will be dedicated solely to support RCA operations, the announcement said. The Rosens are long-time RCA members.

FCC Seizes Equipment from Pirate Broadcasters in Boston

The FCC reports that it seized transmission equipment from two pirate radio stations in Boston on March 26. According to court documents, the seizures involved an illegal broadcaster that identified as “Big City” on various FM channels from Dorchester, Massachusetts (with a studio in Roxbury) and pirate “B87.7 FM,” which operated on 87.7 FM from Dorchester. The K7RA Solar Update

We saw no sunspots during this reporting week, March 22-28. The previous week had sunspots on only three days, with an average of 5.6.

Average daily solar flux receded from 69.3 to 68.2. Average daily planetary A index dropped from 14.4 to 10.6, and average mid-latitude A index declined from 11.3 to 8.9.

ARRL Headquarters Closed on Friday, March 30, no ARRL Letter this Week

ARRL Headquarters will be closed on Good Friday, March 30. There will be no W1AW bulletin or code practice transmissions on that day. The ARRL Letter is on hiatus this week, and no ARRL Audio News will be released on Friday.

ARRL Headquarters will reopen Monday, April 2, at 8 AM Eastern Daylight Time. The ARRL Letter and ARRL Audio News will return next week.

Malawi 7Q7EI DXpedition Team Taking Advantage of New FT8 “DXpedition Mode”

The 7Q7EI DXpedition in Malawi is using the new FT8 “DXpedition Mode,” which is still in beta, but some of those attempting to work 7Q7EI on that mode are not using the correct version of the FT8 software (part of WSJT-X version 1.9.0-rc3) released on March 18.
